Update on Magdala
On this feast day of Mary Magdalene, Fr. Eamon Kelly LC, Vice Chargé of the Pontifical Institute Notre Dame of Jerusalem Center, wants to update everyone on the progress of the Legion of Christ-sponsored holy site, Magdala, dedicated to this great saint.
Magdala is located on the site of the town that was purported to be the home of Mary Magdalene. It sits on the Sea of Galilee, about a two-hour drive north of Jerusalem.
“We are initiating construction tomorrow on Phase II to build the Guesthouse and finish the Restaurant,” said Fr. Eamon.
Also on the property is the “Duc in Altum” chapel, including an atrium with mosaics dedicated to women in scripture.
Fr. Eamon suggests a visit to the website, www.magdala.org , which calls Magdala a “Crossroads of Jewish and Christian history.”
“The website has been completely revamped and is wonderfully user-friendly,” said Fr. Eamon.
The website gives more details on the treasures of Magdala, which contains the ruins of a synagogue were Jesus is thought to have actually preached. Other significant archeological finds have also been discovered there, including a large, carved square stone dubbed the Magdala Stone, ceremonial bathing pools called mikve, and other ruins from the ancient town.
Volunteers are encouraged to participate in the ongoing work at the Archeological Park at Magdala. For more information, email the Magdala Volunteer Program at volunteer@magdala.org. Fr. Eamon said the cost to participate, including lodging at the Magdala center, is about $25 a day.
